Welcome Fans

Here are some hot links about the University of Tennessee - " Home of The Vols ". The legendary ABC announcer Keith Jackson noted in his opening monologue prior to the Fiesta Bowl that no school in the country can match Tennessee with football tradition. The pageantry of a cool, crisp Saturday afternoon in Knoxville is truly second to none.

They are the "1998 National Champions", who went undefeated (13-0) for the season. The '98 team was the only team to go 13-0 in school history and is considered the best overall team since 1938. Tee Martin led the Vols to their second consecutive SEC title that year. In 1997, Peyton Manning had helped lead the Vols to their first SEC title since 1990. During the four years (1994-1997) that Peyton Manning played at Tennessee, he broke 42 records - 2 NCAA, 7 SEC and 33 at Tennessee. Through nine seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, he hasn't missed a game, has won two NFL MVP awards, has carved a still-expanding niche in the NFL record book and earned a long-sought Super Bowl championship. Here's a great site on Peyton Manning: PeytonManning18.com

Top kicker Palardy commits to Vols

By Dave Hooker
July 2, 2009

Michael Palardy, rated the No. 1 kicking prospect in the nation by Scout.com, has committed to kick for Tennessee. The kicker from St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., made the announcement during a cookout at his home with family and friends on Thursday evening. Much of Palardy’s decision was based on his visit to Knoxville for UT’s kicking camp in early June.

“When I went up to Tennessee, it speaks for itself,” said Palardy. “Knoxville is unbelievable. It’s like a home away from home.” Palardy, a commitment for the 2010 class, said he was also impressed with UT head coach Lane Kiffin and running backs/special teams coordinator Eddie Gran, who recruits the South Florida area.

University of Tennessee Rolls Out Tennessee Fund

By University of Tennessee
July 2, 2009

The University of Tennessee announced today the creation of the Tennessee Fund, designed to consolidate and streamline the athletic benefit program, ensure equity in the program, and eliminate any confusion for donors regarding tax deductibility of their gifts. "Tennessee has historically had a unique partnership between academics and athletics - especially as it relates to our donors ability to have athletic benefits for academic donations," said University of Tennessee Interim President Dr. Jan Simek.

"The creation of the Tennessee Fund will further enhance that relationship while also allowing the university to streamline the management of athletic benefits." Under the Tennessee Fund, the athletic department will assume central responsibility for the management of all athletic benefit priority programs, including the benefit program for those who contributed to non-athletic programs. All donors interested in athletic benefits, including Volunteer Athletics & Scholarship Fund (VASF) donors and Lady Vol Boost-Her Club donors, will be combined into a new athletics administered program known as the Tennessee Fund.

Top 25 Players in the SEC: No. 19 Terrence Cody

By Kevin Brockway
July 2, 2009

Why he's No. 19: Physically imposing on the defensive line at 6-foot-5 and 365 pounds, Cody was a big reason why Alabama's defense was so tough to run against last season. Alabama led the Southeastern Conference in rush defense, giving up just 74.1 yards per game on the ground. Cody often occupied two blockers, freeing up other defenders to make tackles.

Key number: 31, the number of tackles Cody had from the nose guard spot last season. Cody was equally tough rushing the passer last season, recording 3.5 sacks.
Fun fact: Nicknamed "Mount" Cody because of his combination of height, strength and size. Out of Riverside High in Fort Myers, Cody also was a high school teammate of former Gator running back Chevon Walker.

SEC 2009: Who, What, When, Where, and Why

By Franklin Crittenden
July 2, 2009

The SEC has gone through some major changes in the past five years. Some coaches were fired, other coaches were hired, there were even a couple of coaches who left the SEC only to return and start all over at a different school. In this period of time, the SEC has won three National Championships and four out of the last six BCS titles. All this was accomplished while every school in the SEC except three went through coaching changes, those schools are Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Georgia. Some schools changed coaches more than once.

There was a changing of the guard during that time. Powerhouse football programs like Tennessee and Auburn lost ground, while teams like Alabama and Ole Miss gained ground. Here are the standings for all the SEC teams and my opinions on their chances in 2009.

Ten Possible Upsets for the 2009 College Football Season

By David Regimbal
July 1, 2009

The possible upset: Tennessee Volunteers—September 19th. Can you imagine? There would be pure pandemonium in the streets of Gainesville. Tim Tebow would be giving another post-game speech about how hard his team will practice and that a lot of good would come of this. Heck, I could even see coach Lane Kiffin committing a few recruiting violations as celebration.

One thing is certain: the new Tennessee coach is trying to turn the tide for his Volunteers. What better way to do it than by beating Florida? He knows that the Gators struggle in September conference games. They fell to Ole Miss last year in September and to the Auburn Tigers the year before. If this trend continues, it will be like USC dropping one game every year that it shouldn't or Joe Paterno defying the laws of...being so freaking old but still coaching.

Lane Kiffin's Name Prompts Reporters To Jump Gun

By Tre Wells
July 1, 2009

Lane Kiffin must drive a station wagon bigger than the one my mom had back in the '80s. And that one was pretty big. There is no other way he has the room for everyone to hop on his media bandwagon the way reporters have in the past several months. Case in point: Secondary violations are reported every year by numerous schools in handfuls (South Carolina 11, Clemson 13, Georgia three, and Florida two, all in 2008). Those are minor examples too. Since 2000, Ohio State has reported more than 375 violations. These violations are commonplace among a lot of schools and have never made news until recently.

But type the words “secondary violations” into a Yahoo search engine and the first three articles you find will be about Lane Kiffin’s half a dozen secondary violations since joining the University of Tennessee. It makes you wonder—why now? Why are these violations so newsworthy now? The answer has to be Lane Kiffin’s name. Love him or hate him, evidently you are reading about him.

Starting with the 2010-11 sports seasons, the athletic department "will begin assigning all athletic benefits (season tickets, away game tickets, and parking)," UT stated.

UT makes major change in athletics tickets

By News Sentinel staff
July 1, 2009

KNOXVILLE - Donors to academic programs at the University of Tennessee will need to give money to a new fund overseen by the athletic department in order to qualify for tickets to sporting events and to get parking passes starting in the 2010-11 season. UT says it has created the Tennessee Fund "to consolidate and streamline the athletic benefit program, ensure equity in the program, and eliminate any confusion for donors regarding tax deductibility of … gifts."

The new fund also will include the Volunteer Athletics & Scholarship Fund and Lady Vol Boost-Her Club. Gifts may be made to academics through the Tennessee Fund, but donors won't be able to designate those donations toward specific academic programs, UT said. Instead, campus leadership will allocate such donations.

Years ago, we beat Florida at home, and (coach) Steve Spurrier's phone number got painted on the rock.

University of Tennessee's iconic rock moving

By Chloe White
July 1, 2009

After more than 40 years at one corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Pat Head Summitt Street, the University of Tennessee's iconic Rock will be moved across the intersection this month to make way for a new student health center. It still will be highly visible to gameday traffic, where passersby can read the birthday wishes, rallying cries, protests and other messages slathered on with paint, sometimes several times a day.

The favorite Rock story for Jeff Wilcox, the 2008-09 Student Government Association president: "Years ago, we beat Florida at home, and (coach) Steve Spurrier's phone number got painted on the rock. After so many phone calls, it got painted over pretty quickly." Wilcox also cites the joke about men who solicit marriage via a painted proposal: "What girl would turn down a rock that big?"

At 6-foot-5, 350 pounds, John Jerry has started at both right guard and his current position of right tackle for the Rebels.

Top 25 Players in the SEC: No. 20 John Jerry

By John Patton
July 1, 2009

This is the sixth in a 25-part series that counts down the best football players in the SEC heading into the 2009 season.

Ole Miss senior offensive lineman: Why he's No. 20: A mammoth and versatile athlete, the 6-foot-5, 350-pound Jerry has started at both right guard and his current position of right tackle for the Rebels. Best known as perhaps the SEC's best run blocker, he has improved against pass rushers. Mississippi offensive line coach Mike Markuson said Jerry is a quick study when the Rebels put in new schemes.

Key numbers: 2. Projected as an NFL guard, early 2010 mock drafts list Jerry as a potential first- or second-round pick. If he goes in the first, it will be the second straight year a Rebel lineman achieved that feat. Left tackle Michael Oher was the 23rd overall selection (by Baltimore) in the 2009 draft.
Fun facts: Jerry's cousins Eddie Strong and Dwayne Rudd are both NFL free-agent linebackers.

Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer wants to coach again but is waiting for the right opportunity.

Whispers: Fulmer waiting for right opportunity

By Tom Dienhart
June 30, 2009

Even though he has no team to coach, former Tennessee head man Phillip Fulmer still is trying to just "make a first down." "Football is what I know," he says. "It's in my blood. That's why I want to coach again." Fulmer enjoys his new lifestyle, which includes hunting and fishing. He also is a partner in an investment firm with one of his former players. And Fulmer is mulling some offers to do TV work this fall.

"I really have a couple of big decisions with what I am going to do with television," says Fulmer, who spent four years as a player, 13 as an assistant and 17 as coach at Tennessee. "I have to ask myself if I want that significant of an obligation for 16 or 17 weeks." Fulmer says he had some offers to coach after last season but preferred to take time off to evaluate everything. Would he have interest in coaching at a non-Big Six school? "All of that remains to be seen," says Fulmer, who says he would have no problem coaching outside the Southeast.

Former Vol captain Al Wilson back in Knoxville

By Wyatt Clemmer
June 30, 2009

The captain of Tennessee's 1998 National Championship team is back in Knoxville for a few days. Linebacker Al Wilson grew up in Jackson, led the Vols to their first title since 1951 and spent eight stellar years in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. Wilson will have a football camp next week, but he's in town early to visit with old friends, make appearances at the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs, and to meet with Tennessee's new head football coach.

The former Vol thinks Lane Kiffin will be successful as the head coach of the Vols, and he has respected Monte Kiffin as a defensive coach for many years in the NFL. Wilson also believes Tennessee safety Eric Berry is the best player in the country and is looking forward to watching his leadership on this season's team.

The raw, athletic Pair was impressive in Knoxville in early June.

Pair makes it a pair of Monday commitments

By John Brice
June 30, 2009

Zach Fulton & Marques Pair committed to UT Vols football Monday afternoon, making the total pledges a 11 for 2010

When he arrived at the University of Tennessee's one-day camp for lineman earlier this month, Marques Pair was a relative unknown in the ultra-competitive world of football recruiting. A good performance in front of myriad media outlets, not to mention the Volunteers' coaching staff, changed things for the athletic but raw 6-foot-6-inch, 255-pounder from Sumter, S.C. On Monday, just as Pair's recruitment was reaching a bit of a frenzied state with increased interest from UT, South Carolina, North Carolina, Clemson, N.C. State and Auburn, Pair ended the suspense when he pledged to UT.

"Pretty much just when I went to their camp, I did my thing that I was told to do by the coaches and it just went from there. They liked me, like what they see and I liked their camp," said the well-spoken Pair, who also is solid in the classroom with nearly a 3.0 GPA. "I started talking to some coaches and players and the next thing you know, I got the offer and I committed." Pair's commitment was the Vols' second in the trenches on Monday; fellow three-star offensive lineman Zach Fulton of Illinois, the No. 21 guard according to Rivals.com, also declared for Tennnessee.
