Chamique Holdsclaw has gone from being the dominant player in women's college basketball and the brightest star in the WNBA to just another top athlete on the U.S. national team training for the Sydney Olympics.

Mystics' Holdsclaw Named Rookie of the Year

NEW YORK, Aug. 28 -- Chamique Holdsclaw of the Washington Mystics today was named the winner of the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year Award.
Holdsclaw received 48 of a possible 51 votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Dominique Canty of the Detroit Shock, Nykesha Sales of the Orlando Miracle and Tamika Whitmore of the New York Liberty each received one vote.
Holdsclaw, the No. 1 pick in the 1999 WNBA Draft, averaged 16.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 34.2 minutes per game. The 6-foot-2 forward from Tennessee started 31 of 32 games and finished the season ranked sixth in scoring and third in rebounding.
In addition to a Tiffany-designed trophy, Holdsclaw will also receive $5,000. The 51-member voting panel consisted of 15 national media representatives, as well as local media representatives who cover the WNBA regularly from each of the league's twelve markets. This is the second season in which the Rookie of the Year honor has been awarded. The Charlotte Sting's Tracy Reid received the award in 1998.
